First Steps: How to Jump into a Life in Aviation

Roland Delhomme - The FlyBright Team

If you're reading our blog, you've already gone further than casual interest; curiosity now has you looking at schools, programs, cost, features, and timelines. You may already have a rating, or maybe you're thinking about taking first steps; a flight medical exam, a discovery flight, and dedicating some time in days ahead, to starting on your path.

Aviation has many channels, blogs and sources of information that it's actually impossible to absorb what's out there, much less decide on a plan of action. Welcome to 21st century overload and the age of 'new media content producers'. Time may be the biggest challenge you face, since there's simply not enough.

In many corners of flying, however, new flyers and those curious about aviation still have opportunities to gather at grassroots fly-in breakfasts, flying club gatherings, airshows, social events or even FAA sponsored safety events. Flyers tend to be gregarious; we gather for cookouts at the drop of a hat, share information, fly with each other, spend time in each other's hangars, or socially spend time off the field.

Things have changed in recent decades; gone are the days when you walked out to your waiting jet; no more hugs at the fence or seeing operations up-close; don't take this as a sign that aviation has changed, however; you're still as welcome as ever.

Research is a little harder now, with almost too much to look at, and yes, even some airport newspapers or community announcements might not appear in a web search: you can't count the number of times people miss an event that wasn't widely announced.

Don't be discouraged, though; we have an Instagram and are reachable here, online, by phone, and in person. In coming weeks, you'll see us signal opportunities to drop in, attend

an event or meet our staff, students, instructors. We're excited to do community outreach and you should always know that the flying world thrives on welcoming in new faces.

From first steps, like booking a discovery flight, getting bitten by the flying bug, seeing one's own area from above, to more formal steps, like finding a flight surgeon to schedule a flight physical, or finding gear, ordering supplies, or even setting up that flight simulator, finding reliable sources of good info or even books, charts, manuals and study materials flyers frequently give away (many publications have short-lived valid dates) your local flight school is a resource you should feel comfortable approaching.

We hope you're FULL of questions; lots of them.

 We'll be here.
